St Julian's for Grandparents, Teenagers and Everyone Between

St Julian's for Grandparents, Teenagers and Everyone Between

How to run a St Julian's trip when the group spans forty years: a flat waterfront, tables you can reach without steps, and sightseeing you can do sitting down.

The part of St Julian's that works for a group of mixed ages is flat, paved and about ten minutes long. It runs around Spinola Bay past the fishing boats and the Love Monument, and most of the restaurants you would actually book for three generations sit on that stretch or one lift ride above it. Distance is not the problem in this town; steps, heat and the gap between a nine o'clock appetite at seventy-five and one at fifteen are.

The flat spine, and where it breaks

Spinola Bay promenade and the Love Monument (Spinola Bay) is the piece of the town everyone can do together without negotiation. It is free, open at any hour, paved the whole way and lined with benches, which matters more than it sounds when a group is walking at two different speeds and one person needs to sit down every few hundred metres. Ten unhurried minutes takes you end to end. Early morning is the calm hour, quiet enough to hear the water and cool enough to stand about photographing the boats.

Use the promenade as the spine of the trip and put the group on it or just behind it. The St Julian's hotel search covers the hotels along this water. Walking away from the Balluta end, the promenade curves round Spinola Bay and then carries on towards Portomaso and Dragonara Point, where the lido and the casino are. It also runs on into a much longer seafront walk, which is useful when the younger half want to keep moving after lunch and the older half want to turn back for a coffee.

The one place the flat spine breaks is the road above Spinola Bay. Several waterfront restaurants sit below the road and are reached by a staircase. Where that applies I have said so below, along with the way round it.

Everyday lunches nobody has to dress for

Piccolo Padre Pizzeria & Trattoria (Balluta Bay) is the first booking I would make for a group with grandparents and small children in it. It is wheelchair accessible, it is explicitly set up for family lunches and gatherings rather than merely tolerant of them, and it is open continuously from 11:00 to 23:00. That last detail is the one that saves the trip: a table of nine can eat at three in the afternoon, when the morning has worn everybody out and the dinner sittings are still three hours away. Wood-fired pizza for the youngest, pasta and seafood for the rest, sea views, no formality to manage. €20–45 a head.

CUBA Spinola Bay (Spinola Bay) does a similar job in a different register and is the default when nobody can agree and nobody wants to dress up. It runs from breakfast through to dinner, it is walk-in friendly, and groups are routine. There is a terrace and there are indoor rooms, so you can move the party out of the sun or the wind rather than sit through either. The menu covers Neapolitan pizza, burgers and fresh fish, and it labels calories and macros, which occasionally settles an argument before it starts. €15–30 a head. Reserve through their site if you are more than six.

Spinola Bay dinners with a Maltese accent

San Giuliano (Spinola Bay) has the position on the bay and a long local following, and it takes group bookings online. Two things to know before you send older parents to it. There is a staircase down from the road; if steps are a problem, go the long flat way round the bay instead and allow the extra ten minutes. And there is a €25 minimum food charge per head plus a €2.25 cover, with starters at €15.50–19.50 and mains at €16–32.50, so a table that splits over price has an escape hatch next door at Raffael, the more casual pizzeria under the same owners. It serves lunch and dinner every day except Monday, when it opens for dinner only.

Gululu (Spinola Bay) is where to eat Maltese food without hiring a car: rabbit, bigilla, ġbejniet, a Maltese platter. The Taste of Malta set menu at around €30 is a painless way to get ten people fed on local dishes without ten separate decisions and ten separate explanations. Otherwise reckon on €25–40 a head. It is dinner only from Monday to Thursday, and does lunch as well from Friday to Sunday. Book online or by phone, and book early if you want a terrace table at sunset, because those go first.

Tables of eight and over

Le Majoliche (set back from Spinola Bay) is a Sicilian trattoria in the 2026 Michelin Guide and the least fussy of the guide entries in St Julian's. It is classic generous cooking rather than a tasting menu, which is usually what a mixed-age table wants, and the trattoria format copes properly with a party of eight to twelve. Being off the seafront it is also quieter than the bay, which is worth something if anyone at the table is hard of hearing. €30–50 a head.

Le Majoliche, St Julian's

Zest (Spinola Bay, inside the hotel) earns its place on breadth. Dim sum, bao, sushi, curries and Japanese-Peruvian plates on one menu means the person who will not share and the person who wants to try everything can both order well at the same table. Group reservations go through the hotel, and both the terrace and the indoor rooms seat parties. Dinner only, 18:30 to 23:00 daily, €45–70 a head. Book ahead in summer.

Zest, St Julian's

Caviar & Bull (Portomaso) is Marvin Gauci's flagship and is in the Michelin Guide. It takes group and private bookings, and the wide menu is the point when half the group wants aged beef and the other half wants fish or caviar. €60–90 a head, dinner only, 18:30 to 23:00.

The dinner you are marking something with

Rosamì at The Villa (a short walk up from Spinola Bay) holds the island's newest Michelin star and is the natural table for an anniversary or a milestone birthday. Read the conditions before you book the whole family in. It serves a single Carte Blanche tasting menu at €120 a head before wine, seated at 6:30pm with last orders at 9:30pm, and it is closed Thursday and Sunday. Guests must be aged 10 or over, and that is a hard rule rather than a preference. Dress is smart casual. It does take larger tables and offers both a private dining room and full exclusive-use buyout, so if the occasion is a big one and the children clear the age bar, it will hold the whole party in one room.

Blue Elephant (Portomaso) is the alternative when someone in the group is under ten. The room does half the work: grandparents get a proper occasion setting, children have ponds and bridges to look at between courses, and Thai sharing dishes let everyone pick their own heat level instead of eating around a compromise. Access is step-free through the hotel, and the kitchen has long experience of large groups and set menus. Dinner 19:00 to 22:30 daily, €45–70 a head.

Blue Elephant, St Julian's

Anima (Portomaso tower) is the view that costs nobody a climb. Lifts run from the tower's main entrance, so there are no stairs between the pavement and the table, and there is a terrace one floor up for sunset. The kitchen does Italian and Sicilian plates plus sushi, and it is in the 2026 Michelin Guide. It takes groups on the dining floor and on the rooftop, and you reserve by phone. €50–80 a head, cocktails €14–18. When the older half want to sit down to dinner and the younger half want a drink upstairs afterwards, this is one address that covers both without anybody crossing town.

Sea without sand

Getting an older parent into the water in Malta usually involves rocks, a ladder or a long walk in the sun. The Reef Club at The Westin Dragonara (Dragonara Point) removes most of that. It is a sea lido open to non-residents on day passes, with shade, loungers, a bar and a toilet all within reach of the water, ladder access to deep clean water for the swimmers, and no sand for anyone to cross. Non-swimmers get somewhere to sit for the whole day rather than a beach towel and a wait.

A day pass runs around €50 a person with part of it credited against food, and there are family rates and passes that bundle food and drink vouchers. Two catches. Sunbeds cannot be reserved, so a group of eight should turn up at opening rather than at eleven and expect to be seated together. And the hotel pools stay resident-only; the sea deck is what you are paying for. In the 2026 season it runs 10:00 to 18:00 from 2 September.

Seeing the island from a seat

Captain Morgan Cruises runs an hour-and-a-half harbour cruise around Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour with commentary, and it is the sightseeing I would put first for anyone who cannot manage the capital's hills. You are seated, shaded and air-conditioned throughout; the harbour boat is wheelchair-friendly with a disabled toilet and indoor window seats, and group bookings are standard. Roughly €16–25 an adult. The full-day island trips at around €50 are a different proposition (long, hot and crowded) and I would leave older parents off that one.

Captain Morgan Cruises, St Julian's

Good to know

FAQs
